Christchurch is the largest city in the South Island. Named by nostalgic English settlers, it has a very English ambience and is known as the "Garden City". The tranquil tree-lined Avon River meanders through the centre of town, and the many parks and gardens contribute to its reputation as a beautiful and pleasant city in which to live. Visit the Antarctic Centre, experience Lunch at the Gondola Restaurant on top of the Port Hills, go for a relaxing Punt on the Avon River.
Use Christchurch as your base to explore Canterbury - whale watching in Kaikoura to the north; visit Akaroa, a charming seaside town which was New Zealand's first French settlement and lunch at a seaside cafe or swim with the Hectors Dolphins; travel to Hanmer Springs and swim in the Thermal Pools; visit the North Canterbury Wineries; take a day trip on the Tranz Alpine scenic railway through the Southern Alps to the West Coast - voted one of the 10 Best Train Journeys in the world.
The walkways of the Port Hills are on the doorstep of the Cottage, and peaceful river walks are close by.

| About the Area: |
The South Island has arguably the best scenery in New Zealand - Fiordland in the south west, with some of the most spectacular landscapes in the world [Middle Earth in "Lord of the Rings"]; the rugged Southern Alps stretch up the western side of the island. The Canterbury region lies in the east of the island, and stretches across to the Alps in the West.
The climate is temperate, and a pleasant feature of the New Zealand is the high proportion of sunshine even in winter. Summer temperatures in Christchurch are warm, with the hottest weather occurring when hot dry foehn norwesterlies blow over the Alps and plains. Typical summer temperatures range from 18ºC-26ºC, but can sometimes climb to over 30ºC. Most of the time the summer temperatures are moderated by sea breezes. Winters are cool, with frosts and temperatures from 8ºC-16ºC.
