| About the Area: |
Leigh is a small traditional fishing village which has kept it's character and charm. There are some lovely walks around the township and harbour, a wharf where you can watch the fishing boats come in daily and unload their fresh fish - or you might want to drop a line over the edge and see if you can catch yourself a feed, maybe a squid! There is the original church, a small village library open a couple of mornings a week, the iconic Leigh Sawmill Cafe which has an international reputation for great live music -often with international musicians. Goat Island Marine Reserve, opened 25 years ago - NZ's first marine reserve is just 5 minutes from here, walking distance if you feel like a wander and where you can see the fish from the rocks or have them swim around your legs if you just want to paddle and not go snorkelling. Goat Island Glass Bottom boat runs tours daily from the beach if you don't want to get your feet wet or wish to learn more about the area and the marine life. Seafriends is a cafe at Goat Island which has a learning centre with an aquarium which is open to the public, wonderful for children. You can get internet access here if you need it. Pakiri Beach is a stunning white sandy beach which has great surf, fishing and where you may not see another person on the beach during the week. Matheson Bay is a lovely family beach with safe swimming, a childrens playground, new changing facilities and where the children could spend hours exploring the rock pools. |
