The Wicklow Mountains is one of Ireland most scenic areas. The area is a walkers paradise with countless opportunities to get away from it all in beautiful unspoilt mountain scenery. Whether you want a gentle stroll in lovely surroundings or prefer a more energetic all day hike there is always a wide choice for every taste. Waterfalls, mountain lakes and deep glaciated valleys all provide a wonderful backdrop for walkers of every ability. Deer, foxes and hares can all be seen in the quiet glens and kestrels, merlin and peregrine falcons can also be spotted with a bit of luck. There is little in the way of man- made settlement in the mountains but with a bit of careful planning it should be possible to ensure that your hill walking day ends at a good pub! Lugnaquilla, Wicklow’s highest peak, rises to over 3,000 feet just behind Aughavannagh Cottage and provides an exhilarating challenge for the energetic and experienced who will be rewarded with spectacular views from the summit. Aughavannagh Cottage is ideally placed on the mid –way point, making it the perfect location for exploring the Way without having to change accommodation every day. The route traverses old military roads, pilgrim trails and disused mountain routes. The scenery is consistently breathtaking and there is a real sense of discovering a hidden Ireland of sleepy little villages, ancient monastic settlements and historic sites associated with Irelands fascinating past. From Aughavannagh Cottage northwards the route crosses mountain valleys and ridges, whilst to the south beyond the mountain ringed Aughavannagh Valley the Way slips gently into wooded hill country of small farms and distant views of mountains as far south as Tipperary and Waterfor
