Strandhill is an enchanting seaside village located 8 km outside Sligo town on the wild Atlantic coast.

The peninsula is dominated by Knocknarea Mountain, on top of which is the ancient burial cairn of Queen Maeve who ruled the province of Connaught in the 1st century AD.

Strandhill boasts miles of long sandy beaches, internationally renowned for surfing, a challenging golf links, horse riding, seaweed baths, scenic walking trails, an array of lively pubs and restaurants and much more.

Activities

Surfing in Strandhill
Strandhill offers some of Ireland and indeed Europe’s finest surfing, attracting wave riders from across Ireland and overseas. Predominantly a sand bottomed beach break, it is suitable for beginners as well as advanced surfers. For the more experienced surfer there is a rocky, right hand point break at the north end of the beach. Surf lessons are available at the beach from friendly qualified instructors.

Fishing and Angling.
Ireland’s northwest region is home to some of Europe’s finest angling. As well as being famous for its sea angling, the area is considered a salmon fishing paradise.

Horse riding.
Strandhill offers a variety of horse riding opportunities for all levels of experience, from picturesque woodland trails and mountain paths to vast sandy beaches.

Yeats Country
The archaeology, beauty and folklore of Sligo have provided inspiration for much of W.B. Yeats’ poetry. The Yeats Society of Sligo has an exhibition centre and library in Sligo town. Each year they run the ‘Yeats Festival’ as well as international summer schools.

Warriors Festival.
Each summer around 400 athletes congregate in Strandhill to compete in the Warriors run. The race follows the footsteps of the legendary Queen Maeve and her warriors, taking competitors from the canon gun at Strandhill beach to the 1070ft summit of Knocknarea where the Maeve is reputedly buried. The day culminates in music and festivities back in the town. For more details
