Fishing
The surrounding rivers and lakes offer a great source of trout and course angling, especially the suck river and lake O'Flynn.

Swimming
Claremorris, about ten miles from Williamstown offers an indoor heated swimming pool.

Walking
Suck Valley Way ; The River Suck links a 60 mile stretch of countryside in West Roscommon and East Galway known as The Suck River Valley. Walkers can enjoy this unspoiled countryside by walking The Suck Valley Way.
The 100km Walk Way is unusual among Irish Waymarked Ways because for most of it's length it lies across lowland farms. It also crosses the boglands and callows of the river Suck with their numerous lakes and drainage channels. The way passes through the "Nine Friendly Villages", Ballygar, Creggs, Glinsk, Ballymoe, Ballintubber, Dunamon, Castlecoote, Athleague and Castlecoote.

GAA
Being on the border of Galway and Roscommon, there is a healthy GAA parish and county rivalry. At week-ends there is always either an inter club or inter county GAA match.
Well worth a visit.

Attractions

Templetogher Mill
Templetogher, 'the Church of the Pass', is the ancient seat of Christianity in the parish. The earliest church outline can still be seen in Templetogher. Nearby is St. Patrick's Well, a popular pilgrimage place until recent times. Tradition says that St. Patrick passed this way in the fifth century.

Glinsk Castle
Reputed to be the last castle built in this country, stands as an impressive reminder of the architectural skills and styles of the Norman era.
This Castle was the principal residence of Mac David Burke, lord of Clonconway. It was built in the mid 17th century on the site of an earlier Castle.

Dunmore Castle
Built by de Bermingham about 1225, but was burned by the sons of the kings of Connacht in 1249, by Fichra O'Flynn in 1284 and by Rory O'Connor in 1315. The present castle was built after the last burning. It is a massive rectangular tower of four storeys situated on a motte with the remains of a fortifying wall around it.

Augustinian Friary
Located near the centre of the town, was founded for the Augustinian friars by Walter de Birmingham, Lord Baron of Athenry, in 1425. There is a fine and decorative 15th century west doorway. Lord Athenry saved the monastery from suppression in 1541, but in 1574 John Burke-Fitzthomas seized it. As late as 1641 there were still a prior and 30 friars in the community.

Oran Round Tower
Towers were a central part of any defensive system. Usually round, with living quarters at the upper levels. Round towers were also used as part of a town wall.

Lough key Forest Park
Situated between Boyle and Carrick On Shannon in county Roscommon is about a half an hours drive from Williamstown and offers a range of activities like fishing, boating, walking and picnicking.
