About the Area: Poitou-Charentes is reputed to be the second sunniest region in France after the Cote d'Azur. The seasons are distinct with short. cold winters, early spring and lovely late autumn weather. It is not unusual to be able to sit in the sunshine at late as Halloween. The delights of spring are the new season's growth on the trees and the verges full of primulas and other wild flowers. Wildlife includes buzzards and other birds of prey, hare, deer and lots of wild birds. The swifts come to nest in the barn each year despite the farm cats. Chaunay is situated close to the border with Deux Sevres and not far from Charente, so there are many different areas to visit including Futuroscope near Poitiers, La Vallee des Singes enjoyed by all ages, Cognac, Angouleme, La Rochelle on the coast and all the many market towns around and about. Attractions

The best thing about staying at La Charronniere is that you can please yourself. You can be as active or as relaxed as you wish. The most well known attraction in the area is Futuroscope which celebrates the moving image and has a 'son-et-lumiere' with fountains in the evenings. It is a marvellous full day out. La Vallee des Singes (Monkey Valley) is nearby and guests of all ages have enjoyed visiting this park where some of the monkeys are close enough to touch. Keep your bags tightly closed! For big cities you have Poitiers, Cognac, Angouleme and La Rochelle for sights, shops and cathedrals. La Rochelle, a favourite place, has it's old port, walled city, seafood restaurants, beaches, superb acquarium and other delights. The countryside varies between wide open spaces, woodland and undulating fields. Sunflowers, wheat, maize and colza are the crops that rotate throughout the year in this part of 'La France Profonde'.
