About the area

Location: Lalinde
About the Area: The area around Lalinde is known as the Lindois, which has been inhabited for possibly as long as 20,000 years. There are numerous reminders of the passage of man through the ages, from cave dwellings through a myriad of dwelling types up to the beautiful houses built in stone in the eye-catching Perigord style. In 1843 the Lalinde Canal was commissioned to enable the transport of goods – principally wine – past the Dordogne river rapids. Only 80 years later the canal was decommissioned as road and rail traffic took over the tasks of transporting goods. However, the canal has been restored and maintained so that today it offers both visitors and residents a unique way of viewing the area by canoe, canal barge, on foot or by cycle. The banks on either side of the canal provide peaceful and safe walkways and cycleways.

Although Lalinde is a town in the heart of a popular tourist area it has nevertheless maintained its historical charm and not sacrificed its own particular uniqueness to the demands of the tourist industry. The tourist will therefore find all modern amenities in Lalinde but will still feel as if they are experiencing a time from a quieter and gentler past.

Entertainment

Lalinde has a good variety of shops that will provide everything the visitor needs. These include 3 good supermarkets (Intermarche, Casino and Netto); 2 bakeries; 2 butcheries and a good selection of clothing, stationery, gifts, hardware, estate agents, banks, a centrally situated Post Office and a well-equipped Tourist Office staffed by pleasant and knowledgeable English-speaking advisors. Most of the above are less than a 5 minute walk from 11 Rue Montaigne, with Intermarche and Netto being a little further – about a 12 minute walk.

The “French Morning Market” is thankfully still thriving throughout France. Every town and village in the Dordogne has its own market day. In Lalinde the big market day is Thursday, with a mini-market, selling mainly fruit and vegetables, on a Saturday. In the spring, summer and early autumn the big market day is indeed very big with vendors selling a mouth-watering selection of cheese; fresh and processed meat; fish; vegetables; fruit; nuts and traditionally prepared French delicacies and specialities. Other stalls include clothing; books; gifts; home improvement and regional specialities.

Several good restaurants are within a few streets of the house. These include a traditional French restaurant (Le Petit Loup); 2 good Italian restaurants and others. As is traditional in France, most restaurants offer a variety of “Plat de Jour”, which can be anything from 2 to 5 courses, at prices ranging from 7.00€ to 30.00€. These usually represent excellent value and are highly recommended.

Activities

For the more energetic Lalinde offers a range of activities including walking; cycling; canoeing and horse riding – all of which are available and accessible within a few minutes walk of 11 Rue Montaigne. For those who want to do as little as possible, gentle walks along the canal; painting; photography or just chilling out with a picnic basket and a bottle of wine on the banks of the Dordogne can fill endless hours of pleasure.

If you enjoy driving through spectacular scenery then having or hiring a car is a very good idea. Generally roads are quiet, distances are short and the scenery is every landscape photographer’s paradise. Within a 35 mile radius of Lalinde you can enjoy a vast variety of landscapes ranging from Neolithic caves through forests, farmlands, hills and valleys to quiet spots of serenity and beauty.
