The apartment sleeps up to 4 people in comfort. It consists of a modern fully fitted kitchen (including microwave, dishwasher, fridge, toaster and kettle) and a log stove making Spring and Autumn holidays a delight. There is plenty of room for the large dining table in the kitchen but on warm sunny days you will probably choose to eat outside on the sunny balcony directly outside the kitchen and which overlooks the valley and church below. There is a barbeque on the balcony.
Stairs from the kitchen lead to the pretty bedroom which has twin beds and is heavily beamed with polished chestnut flooring. There is a wardrobe and chest of drawers.
From the kitchen steps lead down to the sitting room which is beamed and has lovely views across the valley. The settee easily converts into a double bed and there is a walk-in wardrobe. The bright modern bathroom has a large shower and heated towel rail which ensures that it is always comfortably warm and towels dry.

The apartment shares access to the gravelled garden and paved patio with the Garden apartment. The garden is a real sun trap but there is shade if you need it on the patio. The flower beds are filled with shrubs, roses and herbs. The garden is ideal to enjoy the sun or to have a barbeque. Loungers are provided together with a table and chairs.
The garden is not fully enclosed and there are uneven stone steps in and around the property so not ideal for very young children but is great for active older children and young teens as there is plenty to amuse and excite them in the area.
The apartment is provided with a barbeque kept on the balcony with table/chairs and sunshade.
There is a washing machine located in the utility room for the use of the guests along with an iron & ironing board.
It is possible to drive up the narrow lane to the house to unload luggage etc. but not to park the car outside the house. However there are several parking areas within a short walk.

| Transport: |
There are flights from a number of UK airports to Bergerac and you are then only about 60 minutes drive away from Castelnaud. At Bergerac airport there are several hire car companies whose rates are competitive. Ryanair and Flybe service Bergerac and there are a number of car hire companies with offices at the airport. As Bergerac is such a small airport it is possible to be on the road within 20 minutes of landing! The drive from the airport is very straightforward and we provide detailed instructions on how to reach "Le Rouquet". If however you choose not to fly, the village is only about 45 minutes from the excellent French motorway system.

The historic village of Castelnaud is dominated by the castle which sits on a rocky spur overlooking the river Dordogne and towards the neighbouring castle of Beynac just a few kilometres away. These two castles were held by the opposing sides during the Hundred Years War. This stretch of the river is particularly picturesque with many villages nestling on the banks under high cliffs and with castles looking down from above.
The village consists of honey coloured stone houses which run down the hill from the castle to the river with Le Rouquet halfway down on the main footpath. In the lower village, by the river, there is a general store, baker, butcher, post office, ATM machine as well as two restaurants and canoe hire office. In the upper village, just below the castle, there are cafes and some tourist shops.

| About the Area: |
Castelnaud is in an area of exceptional beauty with pretty villages and castles to explore. Sarlat, La Roque Gageac, Beynac and Domme are outstanding and all within just a few kms. Other attractions include markets selling local produce, gardens and prehistoric sites including the famous Lascaux caves with their wall paintings. Our favourites are:-
The garden at Marqueyssac with its unique style of topiary and marvellous views over the Dordogne valley and across to Castelnaud
The walled village of Domme with its fortified gateways and views over the river
The Saturday market at Sarlat with its hustle and bustle and local gourmet specialities (the old town is exceptional with many alleyways and cafes in secluded spots)
To stroll along the waterfront of La Roque Gageac followed by a lazy meal looking over the river;
No visit is complete without a canoe trip down the river which can be arranged from Castelnaud. |
