The tiny hamlet of Welsh Frankton stands between the famous village of Whittington, the birthplace of the first Lord Mayor of London and the delightful town of Ellesmere, which is a pretty market town with Tudor, Georgian and Victorian buildings, found nestling between the beautiful mere (lake) and the Shropshire/Llangollen Canal, in an area known as Shropshire's Lakeland. Originally a fortified Anglo-Saxon settlement, Ellesmere is steeped in history. The town is home to the lovely Church of Saint Mary, with its 15th Century roof and Thomas Telford was based in the town while building the canal. There are a variety of shops, good pubs and restaurants and an abundance of entertainment on and around the nine lakes, which surround the town. Stroll through Cremorne Gardens, enjoy fishing and sailing or explore Colemere Country Park with its wonderful wildlife and scenic walks. As the townspeople say, there really is 'a mere for all'!
The World Heritage Centre in Ironbridge, the beautiful hills at Church Stretton and many excellent golf courses are also within easy reach.
