About the area

Location: Freshwater Bay
About the Area: Freshwater is an ideal holiday location if you enjoy the outdoor life. With one coast facing the English Channel and Atlantic Ocean and the other facing the Solent and the mainland the West Wight has a very different atmosphere to the busier eastern side of the Island. Landmarks include Freshwater Bay, The Needles, Tennyson Down, Fort Victoria, Alum Bay Cliffs and Yarmouth Castle but there are other places like Newtown Creek - an unspoilt haven for wildlife, Hannover Point with it's dinosaur footprints on the rocks, the ancient standing stones at Mottistone and Hulverstone and beaches ranging from safe and sandy to wild and rocky!

The West Wight is well known for its numerous footpaths and bridleways and has an annual Walking Festival every spring. From the Studio Apartment the cliff tops are only minutes away with walks over Tennyson Down to the Needles or along the River Yar to Yarmouth.

Activities

The West Wight is great for outdoor sports. For the more active there is good swimming, fishing and snorkeling at Freshwater Bay and the rock pools there have kept generations of children amused. There is good surfing, windsurfing and kite surfing at nearby Compton Bay. Mountain biking and horse riding over the numerous bridleways on the downs is accessible from Afton without going on a metalled road. Paragliding and hang gliding are popular on the cliffs at Afton Down. Boats can be launched from the slipway at Freshwater Bay and the yachting centre of Yarmouth is only a 5 minute drive.

In fact within a mile of the Studio Apartment there are recognised areas for walking, cycling, mountain biking, swimming, snorkling, diving, fishing, surfing, sailing, windsurfing, paragliding, kite surfing, golf, horse riding, bird watching and nude sunbathing!

There are also numerous attractions for children with clean, safe beaches and a wealth of countryside to explore on fine days, and places like the Dinosaur Museum and adventure parks like Blackgang Chine and Robin Hill when the weather doesn't cooperate.

Freshwater bay Golf Course is a 5 minute walk up to the downs. This 18 hole course on Afton Down is generally regarded as one of the best golf courses on the Island and is regularly visited by enthusiasts from the mainland and abroad. But there are others golf courses at:

Ventnor Golf Club
Newport Golf Club
Osbourne Golf Club
Ryde Golf Club
Shanklin Golf Club
Westridge Golf Course and Driving Range

Isle of Wight named as one of the World's Best Cycling routes by Lonely Planet - 11/Nov/09

Attractions

The beach at Freshwater Bay is a combination of pebbles and sand and has wonderful rockpools with crabs and small fish which has kept generations of small children amused for hours and is very sheltered from the prevailing wind. Compton Bay is the Island's surf beach and is about 5 minutes by car. Big surf is rare in the summer months but there is lots of sand at low tide on this long unspoilt beach. Great for picnics and BBQs. More sheltered and busier is another sandy beach, Colwell Bay, which is about 10 minutes by car. Here there is a promenade, cafes, beach huts and lots of families and children.
