About the area

Location: Kendal, The Lake District
About the Area: The Lake District is a place for all seasons. Its visitors can enjoy snow covered mountain tops, fragrant bluebell woods in May, the long days of summer and even a brisk walk on a blustery Autumn day with its spectacular colours knowing that they have a comfortable cottage to return to.

Of course, in any season, the weather varies and there is plenty to do on any day even if it is wet (and it is much drier here than many people expect). Keswick Pencil Museum, The World of Beatrix Potter, and Windermere Steamboat Museum all offer undercover displays for all ages.

Attractions

Famous local houses, almost too numerous to mention include, Rydal Mount, Dove Cottage, Brantwood, Holker Hall and Muncaster Castle. Kendal has Museums and an Art Gallery and there are theatres at Grizedale Forest near Hawkshead and at Keswick and Kendal. Ambleside hosts The Lakes Summer Music Festival for a very busy week in August - a real feast of musical delight. The Armitt, Ambleside Museum, now open in the village should not be missed.

Victorian Steamers ply several larger lakes as do modern smaller cruisers. On Windermere, England's largest lake, you can take a cruise which links up with the renovated steam railway at the south end of the lake - a must for children of all ages! High spots of the summer include the world famous Grasmere Sports, Rydal Sheep Dog Trials and the equally popular Ambleside Sports.
